Cleaning up after a Fire in Parachute, Co

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

A house fire is one of the most unfortunate events for any homeowner. If your house is damaged by fire, SERVPRO of Garfield and Pitkin Counties will help you get back on your feet. However, there are a few things that homeowners in the Grand Junction area and elsewhere must do after a fire.

Call your Insurance

You must immediately contact your insurance carrier. Your agent will assist you in determining what happens after the fire has been extinguished and guide you through the process of locating qualified contractors. Your adjuster should help you find a somewhere to stay while your home is being repaired, and they can also help you figure out your current financial condition.

Call us!

SERVPRO of Garfield and Pitkin Counties is a restoration company that helps people with their homes following a fire throughout the US. What makes a restoration company imperative is that you cannot just head back into your home after a fire. Numerous hazards must be cleaned and boarded, and various other issues must be handled first. For example, the water used to put out the fire can cause water damage, a whole other problem to add to the list following a fire.

What's salvageable?

Once you've had a restoration specialist handle the specifics within your home and have been given permission to enter, it's time to pick through your belongings to see what can be preserved and what must be discarded. For example, you may be able to salvage objects from your home that have not been destroyed. Many more objects will need to be sorted and disposed of because they are unsalvageable.

It's devastating to be the victim of a house fire. It's also a frightening process, but you don't have to do it alone. SERVPRO's highly trained technicians are ready to assist you 24/7. So give us a call today at 970-618-1516; we will make it "Like it never even happened."

How to get gum out of your clothes or furniture

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

Chewing gum is one of the most difficult substances to remove from cloth, hair, and other areas where it does not belong. You can't just scrape gum away or pick it out of fibers or hair like you can with other issues because gum is so sticky. The simplest way to remove gum out of anything is to change its consistency from a sticky mess to something more manageable, which you can do using items you already have.

For Clothing

Remove as much gum as you can with your fingers, then place a few ice cubes in a freezer bag and place the bag on top of the remaining gum until it has stiffened. Gently peel the gum off, then scrub away any remnants with an old toothbrush.

For your upholstery

The same products and techniques can be used to remove gum from both upholstery and carpet. You can place a few ice cubes in a sealed plastic bag and set it onto the gum stain for a few minutes to freeze and harden the gum.

Use a very dull knife or a spoon to gently scrape off the gum, removing as much as possible. Apply a dry-cleaning solvent to spot-treat the stain on upholstery, following the manufacturer's directions. Be sure to test the solvent on the fabric in a hidden area to make sure it doesn't remove any color from the fabric.

Summer Home Maintenance

6/3/2021 (Permalink)

Sidewalk with writing on it Summer Home Maintenance

THE TOP 10 OUTDOOR TASKS YOU SHOULD COMPLETE THIS SUMMER.

Now that the sun is shining, home improvement projects are on.

Power-wash the outside of your home.

The heat and humidity can cause mold and mildew to grow faster on your home’s exterior. Use a power washer with a mildew remover compatible with your siding.

Cleaning the Gutters

Gutter-cleaning should be part of your summer and fall checklist, but it’s also wise to clear your gutters out before a heavy summer storm hits to get rid of any clogs that may have built up.

 Sealing the Driveway

Your driveway will last longer if you seal it regularly. When you factor in curing time, this project takes three to four days, so check the forecast before you begin to ensure you'll have a few consecutive days of good weather.

Sealing the Deck

Constant exposure to sun and rain takes a toll on your deck’s appearance. Plan sometime during the summer to spruce up your deck by making any necessary repairs, giving it a good cleaning, and sealing it.

Repaint your Fence

Fence-painting can be tedious and time-consuming, but attending to this outdoor maintenance task will keep your fence looking sharp and make it last longer.

Grease the Garage Door

To keep your automatic garage door running properly, ensure everything is tight and lubricate the hinges, rollers, and other moving parts at least once a year.

Repair your Walkway

Whether your walkway is concrete, pavers, or stepping-stones, take some time to rehab and repair it in summer when you're more likely to have several consecutive days of fair weather.

Schedule a cleaning for your HVAC system

Ensure that the fan is functioning well, the coils are clean, and there isn’t faulty wiring that could cause a fire. Don’t forget to change your filter.

Inspect the roof and your home’s exterior and make repairs

Inspect beneath your eaves for loose debris that might have accumulated there. Whenever you see gunk or leaves, collect, and remove them. Next, inspect your roof’s flashing or metal strips typically found around chimneys, vents, satellite dishes, and skylights. It can loosen during a harsh rainstorm or hailstorm, causing potential water leakage.

Inspect your attic and basement

Check the basement and attic for evidence of pests, insects, water damage, mold, or mildew. Turn off the lights to check for any sign of peeking in daylight.

CRAWL SPACE AWARENESS

5/1/2017 (Permalink)

Crew Chief Jason Allred handling business

When warmth and humidity enters the crawl space, and cold winter night air becomes part of the crawl space environment, a vented dirt crawl space can become more trouble than its worth!  To address these problems, call SERVPRO GARFIELD & PITKIN COUNTIES.   We establish ourselves as the leading authority on crawl space moisture problems.

SERVPRO GARFIELD & PITKIN COUNTIES can come and clean and dry out your crawl space, If you have leaking pipes, or a leak we can help refer you to local companies that we support. We look forward to helping you fix your moldy and wet crawlspace.

Approaches to crawlspace remediation are depend on environmental factors such as the presence of moisture, mold, insects, and by esoteric factors such as homeowners’ health, commitment environmental health and capacity.  Two common solutions are:

1: BASIC CLEANUP

the basic minimum crawlspace cleanup should include removal of debris and all materials that are conductive to mold growth, especially if there is already mold or fungi on it.  All crawlspaces should have a vapor barrier at the very least.  Sealing all wood with an anti-microbial coating is optional except in cases of moderate to heavy mold growth.

2: COMPLETE (encapsulation)

In addition to the basic cleanup, all wood materials can be sealed with an anti-microbial coating.  The foundation vents are closed off.  Heavy duty vapor barrier or liner is installed from the top of the concrete stem walls and over the entire ground surface will all the seams sealed.
